An in The Post-Standard's April 13 edition calls for the citizens of Syracuse to "stop assigning blame" and, instead (implied), "to engage in productive discussions
that will help put an end to the senseless violence...."
The newly formed hopes to drive the discourse well beyond the finger-pointing associated with demanding "more of something from someone else" and the assigning of blame. As an organization of organizations, the coalition is committed to fostering as respectful and responsible an approach as possible to changing the way we interact with one another, the better to move beyond the easier task of just describing our problems to the harder one of describing possible solutions for them.
So pervasive, though, are both of those often visceral reactions to the real problems associated with both verbal and "wordless" incivility and actual violence that the coalition might well consider adopting as its one-size-fits-all-situations all-purpose response, "We need to confront our problems together, instead of each other."
For sure, it seems that there's more and more interest in "doing something different," maybe in adopting a different approach both to the issues we face and, just maybe, to each other? At least the popularity of the definition of insanity (as doing the same thing over and over again, while expecting a different result) suggests the absurdity in reacting to our frustration by either blaming or wanting someone else to do more, both representing a pointing outward.
The cautionary advice embedded in the Peace Corps slogan, that we're part of the problem if we're not part of the solution, maybe speaks volumes to us here.
But maybe if there's a willingness to approach how we deal with each other differently, especially organization to organization, group to group, a call to such action/activity might be the "doing something different" some of us are looking for. It sure seems that such a shift out of the ordinary could not only make any discussions between and among us more productive, but also probably more efficient and effective.
For instance, Syracuse Police Chief Frank Fowler's call for us "to seek solutions collectively" might better stand the chance of being that much more productive, efficient, and effective a set of discussions if only we could "break-cycle," break the mold of whatever box we're in interpersonally. Certainly we need not mistake the edges of whatever rut we're in for the horizon, as the saying goes.
In his book "The Fifth Discipline,'' Peter Senge spoke of us needing to change the way we think and interact with one another, so that "shared visions, shared understandings, and new capacities for coordinated action can be established." And wasn't it Einstein himself who reminded us not to expect to solve problems using the same thinking
that created the problems in the first place?
Even "just" adopting the primary moral, behavioral virtues of Respect and Responsibility as our consensus community and operational values provides us with that common language on which all strong organizations get built. In this case, that common language focus on
